The Best SMMA Niches to Make Serious Money

Published on November 25, 2020 by Megan Grant in Misc

“I’M GOING TO WORK WITH EVERYBODY!” you say as you ~officially~ launch your social media marketing agency. Hold the phone, Jan. It’s in your best interest as a professional to position yourself as an expert and specialize. In other words, you need to pick an SMMA niche. But which should you go with? Your niche should meet three requirements. It should be something:

  • You are passionate about.
  • You know a lot about or are willing to learn a lot about.
  • That’s profitable.

If you’re having a hard time getting started, let me help. Those first two requirements are on you, but I can give you a hand with the third. Here are some of the more profitable SMMA niches.

The Most Profitable SMMA Niches to Consider for Your Own Business

Tech

The tech industry has been skyrocketing and will continue to skyrocket… probably forever. This is great news for you, because it means that there will continue to be a demand for your social media marketing services.

The even better news is that a lot of tech companies have serious cash to spend.

I want to be transparent here. This isn’t a niche you can BS your way through. It’s pretty obvious whether you know tech or not. It’s very specialized knowledge.

So, if you have that knowledge (or you’re willing to learn), you stand to make pretty good money.

When it comes to picking a niche, I suggest you start broad. For instance, in the case of tech, you might go after clients that fall under:

  • Cryptocurrency
  • Online security
  • Online authentication

If you happen to notice that one is more profitable than the other, then you can zero in on that. But you won’t know unless you try.

Health and Wellness

This is another industry that isn’t going anywhere. We will never not need health and wellness companies, which means that companies will always need help with their social media management.

I’d say the learning curve here can be a lot more manageable than in tech. (Not always, but it can be.) So if you really have no clue what to go with for an SMMA niche, you might consider starting here.

Health and wellness can mean a million different things. Here are some ideas:

  • Yoga
  • Nutrition
  • Supplements
  • Weight lifting
  • Mental health
  • Medicine
  • Medical research
  • Apparel brands
  • Fitness gear and equipment brands
  • Meal prep and delivery companies

And this is barely scratching the surface.

Fashion

Unless people stop wearing clothes, fashion will always be an excellent SMMA niche.

And even if we did, nudity could be a replacement niche. Yeah, I went there.

Anyway…

Keep in mind that “fashion” doesn’t only have to mean clothes or clothing stores. You could also test out SMMA subniches like:

  • Fabric and textile manufacturers
  • Designers
  • Distribution and fulfillment companies

You need to think outside the box. There is no box. The box doesn’t exist.

Travel

My friend, we’re trying to schedule commercial flights to the moon. People will never stop traveling.

Now, as I write this, it’s November 25, 2020. Coronavirus is still very much a thing. Did travel slow down? Of course. But the industry isn’t dead, nor will it die. Like most other industries, it’s had to pivot.

But it’s alive and well, and it’ll continue growing.

Travel can mean:

  • Airlines
  • Hotels and resorts
  • Luggage brands
  • Transportation
  • Travel tech and gear companies

Cannabis

This one is a little unique but definitely worth mentioning.

The cannabis industry is changing before our very eyes. No one can argue that it’s proving to be profitable. Like most other brands, these companies rely heavily on social media marketing.

I’ll always be transparent with you, so I want to share my experience with this niche. This is just MY experience, but do with it what you will.

I’ve been writing about cannabis for a few years for a client of mine (not in the cannabis industry but a related one), and it’s made me a lot of money. So, I figured I’d explore the industry a bit more, starting with dispensaries.

I thought I’d be hitting the jackpot here, because dispensaries are popping up everywhere. And this is happening because they’re meeting a demand. But what I found was with so many of them, and with the competition so high, it wasn’t looking like they were in a place to allocate part of their marketing budget (if they have one) for a third party like me.

Again, this was what I noticed, but I indeed know marketers and writers doing very well in this space. Plus, as you probably already guessed, “cannabis” doesn’t only mean dispensaries. You can also reach out to companies that deal with:

  • Merch
  • Paraphernalia
  • Growers
  • CBD companies

I’m very confident there’s money to be made here. If I had continued exploring this niche, I absolutely would have shelved dispensaries and gone after some of the aforementioned subniches.

Gentle reminder that nothing is set in stone. I see a lot of professionals who are terrified of picking an SMMA niche because… what if it doesn’t work out?!?!?!?!?!?!

Then… you… just… pick… another.

It’s okay. It’s going to be okay. I promise! But you do need a niche. You need to specialize. Specialists make more money than generalists. Also, you’ll enjoy your work more. Period.

There is plenty of room to spread your wings as a social media manager . Which one of these SMMA niches will you try out?
